From TikTok to toy shelves: How viral products are changing small businesses

By Natalia Serrano  Mildred & Dildred storefront in Tucson, Ariz. Photo from Mildred & Dildred's Instagram. A sudden surge in demand for a viral toy has left shelves nearly empty at Mildred & Dildred, a locally owned toy store in central Tucson. The toy, called Needoh, has recently gained widespread attention online, turning a once-steady product into one of the shop’s most sought-after items. Viral trends like this are becoming more common, with social media driving spikes in popularity that can dramatically impact small businesses—sometimes overnight. Needoh, a stress-relief toy brand known for its squishy “Nice Cubes,” has been around since 2018. But only recently, after a viral video, has demand surged nationwide. Last update on Needoh stock i...

The annual Art 24 Competition gave out $1,000 in prizes to three multidisciplinary artworks created in 24 hours. Held at the West Campus for the third year, Pima Community College hosted this unusual art competition in which students form into groups to compete for one $800 prize and two $100 prizes.  Students formed groups of three or more and used at least three of seven art mediums: music, fashion design, creative writing, digital arts, visual arts, theater and dance. They were given a theme, “intimacy,” four prompts, all of which had to be used in the art work, and 24 hours starting on the evening of Thursday, March 26, to complete “...

Let’s go outside: Act One Culture Passes

By Natalia Serrano Act One Culture Pass stand at PCC West Campus. Photo by Natalia Serrano. As a Tucson native, I can say I have not experienced enough of the arts culture here in town. There are dozens of art and history museums in Tucson, and thanks to something offered at Pima, I was able to get out to the Tucson Museum of Art.  All PCC libraries offer what is called a Culture Pass. The Culture Pass is through an organization called Act One. Act One has been in operation since 2011, and was created because there was a need for more funding for field trips at Title 1 schools.  Their goal is to make sure Arizona schools and families get the experiences they deserve in their communities, primarily focusing on helping schools incorporate art experiences and field t...

According to David Donderewicz, PCC’s Executive Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships, the college disbursed the fourth most Pell Grants in the state among public institutions.  The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships (OFAS) states its mission “is to make college accessible to EVERY student.” So far this year, PCC has disbursed over 40 million dollars to more than 9,500 students with nearly 35 million of that money in the form of gift aid such as grants and scholarships.  Stateuniversity.com puts Pima Community College as among the ten largest community colleges in the nation “with an annual enrollment of over 75,000 students." A party everyone is welcome to

By Natalia Serrano Activities held during the Mitski listening party at Heroes and Villains. Photo courtesy of Heroes and Villains. Since the rise of social media and streaming services, physical media has taken an unfortunate backseat. After we were all locked in our houses during COVID, the “listening party” had come back into popularity and is becoming more standard day by day.  I went to Heroes and Villains, a locally owned comic/game/record store, and spoke to one of the managers, Ofelia Ledesma, to get a little more insight into this popular event.  According to Ledesma, the listening party is an event hosted by Record Store Day (RSD). RSD is a company that works closely with record labels to help promote the release of a new album to the fans and general public....

Sex on Campus: Freebies and Fun Facts

By Diedra Eby Kedar Moye on West Campus checking out the “Pleasure Basket,” 2026. Photo by Diedra Eby. Sex is more important on the hierarchy of needs than self-esteem, status, or even freedom, according to Maslow.  Ask yourself: Why are you here at Pima Community College? For some of you, the answer is because your parents told you that you had to come here. For some of you, it’s to improve your self-esteem or your status with the education you’ll obtain.  Some of you will be reaching for the top rung of Maslow’s pyramid with the desire to become the most that you can become. That is self-actualization. Guess what? Sex comes before all of that. Therefore, it is natural to want to have, try to obtain, and seek out sex while attending college.  When you giv...

Requiem for horror: A detailed Resident Evil series recap

By Quinn Smalley It has been two years since the release of Resident Evil 4 Remake was released and it doesn’t seem like that universe’s struggles with Bioterrorism is subsiding anytime soon with the newest installment, Resident Evil 9 Requiem.  The series is well known for its gore, striking visuals, disturbing monster designs, iconic cast of recurring characters and its rich lore. Across eight, going on nine mainline entries, the lore runs deep and with the newest entry seemingly attempting to bring the series full circle with the one of the settings being a ruined Raccoon City, the tragic viral zombie infested city where the series began.  With Resident Evil 9 (RE9) releasing at the end of February, for newcomers to the series, there’s a lot of ground lore-wise. For t...
