A Sentient Roomba’s Guide to Music: Little Simz and Solange drop the first great albums of 2019

By KYLE KERSEY The Beat Report is a bi-weekly music report on some of my favorite new stuff music has to offer, as well as some great albums celebrating anniversaries.   Little Simz – GREY Area (Hip-Hop) “I’m Jay Z on a bad day, Shakespeare on my worst days” is a bold statement for anyone to open their album with, no less an underground rapper.  Boldness is a running theme on the London rapper’s third album, and Little Simz makes good on her braggadocious opener “Offence,” delivering the rare album that’s directly inspired by classics – she cites “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” and “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City” as examples – without sacrificing its voice.  On an aesthetic level, one might miss the presence of such influences. It’s hardly a West Coast gangster story album with Dr. Dre ...

Sugar Skulls take on the town; Tucson’s new indoor football team

By Hank Robichaud   There is professional football ... I repeat, there is professional football in Tucson. The Sugar Skulls, a new Indoor Football League team based in Tucson, has started their inaugural season. The Indoor Football League is an eight-on-eight football game on a 50-yard field with walls that resemble that of a hockey rink. This speeds up the game, making it more of a backyard high scoring type of game resulting in high scores and a ton of high-contact football. It’s great for the fan experience and brings a new entertainment choice to Tucson. The Sugar Skulls look to make an impact in their opening season by going into it with very high expectations. “Maybe I’m a little too hard on myself and my players, but our expectation is that we are trying to win a champi...

My big fat Greek dance off in California

Most Pima Community College students spend their Valentine’s Day doing one of either two things: They can be on a lovely date with their significant other or deep into a Ben and Jerry’s tub of ice cream as they binge watch Gossip Girl for the third time. For members of the Greek Orthodox Church, however, Feb. 14 marks the start of their own holiday, the Greek Folk Dance Festival. Once a year, Greeks of all ages from around the country come together for one weekend in a different location to Greek dance. These Greeks come from Hawaii, Washington, California, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona as they compete against one another. Taking over Tucson’s very own Greek dance group from his sister, Niko Karidakis, along with his cousin, Christopher Kouris are the directors of St. Demetrios Orthodox Ch...
