Pima Community College to Grant Metallica Student Scholarships for Third Year Straight

Source: Pima Community College Press Release Pima Community College has once again been selected as a beneficiary of the Metallica Scholars Initiative for the third consecutive year. Under the program, twenty PCC students will be granted scholarships up to $1000 each for completing their program as of October 12, 2023. The rock band Metallica decided in 2018 to donate $1 million to ten community colleges nationwide. The band wanted to give back to communities that have supported them throughout the years. Their goal was to specifically donate to community colleges to help those students obtain better technical education and trade-career opportunities. Pima Community College Receives $3 Million U.S. Department of Education Grant For Online Degrees

By RUTH BEHRPima Post Pima Community College has been awarded a $3 million grant in order to help Hispanic and low-income students complete degrees online. This grant is part of the U.S. Department of Education's Title V grant program. According to an email from Vice President of Distance Education Michael Amick, with this funding, Pima hopes to expand online student support by developing a Virtual Success Center that focuses on online coaching, mentoring, and other virtual community engagement activities. In addition, the grant will help fund new content for online courses as well as increased professional development for online staff. This comes as Pima continues to see a rise in online enrollment; this Fall 2023 semester has 47% of its classes online.

Pima Selects New Director of Military and Veterans Services

Pima Community College has selected Alissa McKaig as its new Director of Military and Veterans Services, according to an email from Vice Chancellor for External Relations Phil Burdick. Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Retired (Ret.) McKaig is a native of Westmont, NJ. She graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and received her commission as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the university’s Reserve Officer Training Program (ROTC) in 2000. Commissioned into the Army Aviation Branch, Alissa’s first operational assignment was at Fort Hood, Texas, where she served as Company Executive Officer and Platoon Leader, 2nd Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized). Pima Soccer Players Chosen as Players and Goalkeepers of the Week

Arizona Community College Athletic Conference has chosen Pima Community College women’s soccer players Jessica Alvarez and Adriana Pacheco as players and goalkeepers for the week of Sept 17-23. Alvarez, a freshman midfielder, was selected ACCAC Division II Player of the Week while Pacheco, a sophomore goalkeeper, was named ACCAC Division II Goalkeeper of the Week. Alvarez scored three goals and had one assist for the week. She netted two goals in Pima’s win over GateWay Community College and scored one goal in their win at Paradise Valley Community College. Alvarez has played in five games and has eight points. Pacheco played 104 minutes at the net giving up no goals and had four saves. The Aztecs outscored their opponents 13-2 last week. We’re looking to lift student voices by showcasing stories that represent all facets of our diverse community. Pima Chooses New Chief Culture Impact Officer

By RUTH BEHRPima Post Pima Community College announced September 23, 2023 that it has chosen Dr. Brian Stewart to be its new Chief Culture Impact Officer. Stewart has been with the the College for 25 years. He is a registered nurse in Arizona and has degrees in Fine Arts, Nursing and a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Learning Science. During Fall 2022, he took on the role of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for the College. Stewart will also remain in his role as Vice President at Northwest Campus.

SunTran’s proposed route changes may affect Pima students

In early August, SunTran and the City of Tucson announced extensive bus route plan changes being discussed with the goal of “creating a more equitable, effective, and efficient transit network”. SunTran’s proposed changes affect nearly all current routes, including those leading to and from Pima’s campuses. Plans include more frequent service and extended hours, including on weekends. While some view the potential changes as promising, others, especially those who heavily rely on the buses’ current routes, are unsure about the proposed changes. Pima Participates in Deaf Awareness Month

By RUTH BEHRPima Post September is Deaf Awareness Month, a time to recognize the unique culture and languages of the Deaf community. The North American Deaf community includes those who are deaf, deafblind, and hard-of-hearing as well as Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs).  According to Gallaudet University, approximately 0.9-2.2% of the US population has what the University refers to as “a severe hearing impairment or is functionally deaf.” While not all those people are part of the Deaf community, Ernest Willman, one of Pima’s American Sign Language professors, is among them. Willman, speaking through an interpreter, says, "I am from a generationally Deaf family. My parents are Deaf and my siblings are also Deaf." While the Deaf community is vast and diverse, they ar...
