The Witching Weekly: 10/10

By Ruby Maldonado Happy October, everyone! My name’s Ruby, and this is The Witching Weekly! Here, I give weekly tarot readings, psychic tips, and share crafts and recipes. I know that everyone does witchcraft and tarot a little bit differently, and this is the way I like to do it. I respect other’s views and preferences when it comes to this, so I ask that you do the same!  For the week of 9/22, I chose to do a Season of Becoming spread. It is perfect for a new season, new school year or even just a fresh start!  I like to start by cleansing my deck, especially when I’m reading for other people. The readings I do can be different every time, whether it’s specific to one person (but I don’t know it), or it can be very broad, with a message that everyone can take from. I us...

Twelve Days of Michelin Star Tacos Took Tucson by Storm

By Caroline Hansen As the first UNESCO designated Creative City of Gastronomy in the United States, it’s only fitting that Tucson would welcome a guest pop-up for the first taqueria to receive a Michelin star, Taquería El Califa De León. The 12 day event hosted by GrinGO and Agave House Modern Cocina was held at Main Gate Square on the corner of University Boulevard and Park Avenue, just west of the University of Arizona campus.  Organizer Brian Krupski, CEO and founder of the GrinGO app, said he chose the university location not only for the guaranteed foot traffic it would provide El Califa de León, but also for the attention it would draw to the entire area and surrounding businesses.  “So many Tucsonans don’t come to the Square and it’s a shame because there are ...

A Night at the Races: NASCAR or Dragway… Take Your Pick or Hit Both!

By Diedra Eby Photos by Vanessa Cecena of Tumbleweed Customs In South Tucson near the Tucson Fairgrounds, there are two popular racing spots of very different types. One of them, the Tucson Speedway track, is one of only three paved tracks in Arizona, with a .375 mile oval NASCAR track where you can see all kinds of cars racing: modifieds, late models, pro stocks, hobby stocks, super late models, thunder trucks and more. They host multiple races in one night. On Saturday, Sept. 13, their first race commenced with a bunch of Pintos from the 70s. Pintos were known for crushing at the slightest impact, so it’s impressive to see so many in one place. The next race had Novas and Mustangs. After that were Pro Late Models, which is a class of stock car in short-track racing. Ther...

Tornado Devastation Hits Central America

By Joseph Cunningham Photo by London, Ky., Mayor Randall Weddle Recently across America, tornados have ravaged the central parts of the country, with reports of 28 dead and hundreds of dollars of damages to families. Tragic images have been caught of entire neighborhoods reduced to debris. State officials reported 19 people were killed in Kentucky, seven people were killed in Missouri and two in Virginia. Desert Rose Social Club Aims to Bring Connectivity to Tucson

By Lucia Grijalva Desert Rose Social Club founders (from left to right) Haylee Howe, Shayna Larson, Madison Baity and Kelly Hart. Photo from the Desert Rose Social Club Instagram page. Social clubs, running clubs, book clubs and more local groups such as these have seen a surge in popularity over the past few years. After the Covid lockdown, the world faced a micro extinction of community and places to assemble. Locally run restaurants forcibly shut down, mom and pop shops couldn’t survive and gyms and movie theatres were vacant. Ever since then, individuals have been in search of an environment to foster relationships and build engagement. A select few have taken it upon themselves to create a third place. “Third places” is an idea originally created by sociologist Ray Oldenb...
