Rejoice! The Seven-Year Wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong is Over

By Rory Archer TUCSON, ARIZ. — I've been a fan of “Hollow Knight” for a long time. It was one of the video games my dad bought for me on my Nintendo Switch for my thirteenth birthday, and amidst a global pandemic, I spent most of my isolation navigating the difficult, yet beautiful, world of “Hollow Knight.” I dressed up as the game’s bug princess, Hornet, that Halloween, and spent my time hiking, listening to the game’s soundtrack across dirt trails, as I kept my Nintendo Switch in my bag at all times–just in case I took a break on my hike to continue playing the game.  I expectantly read articles about the game’s supposed sequel, which had been announced the year before, in 2019. It’s been seven years since that announcement, and with the game releasing earlier this month,...

Review: JADE’S Debut Album “That’s Showbiz, Baby!”

By Quinn Smalley Promotional banner for “That's Showbiz Baby,” photographed by Mila Austin and Conor Cunningham. JADE’s career has seen many eras over the 17 years she’s been active. She was rejected on her first attempt at “X Factor: UK" in 2008, and again the following year. She returned for a third time in 2011 and got further than she ever did, ultimately getting selected with three other girls to form the group, Little Mix. From there, Little Mix expanded beyond “X Factor” to greater success globally. After 11 years of successful tours and album releases, the group went on a “hiatus,” which to pop fans means only one thing: solo music to look forward to.  It took two years after Little Mix’s hiatus for Jade Thirlwall, now going by JADE to release her first solo singl...

Trump Admin Claims Tylenol Ccauses Autism, Many Disagree

By Joseph Cunningham  Photo by AP Photo’s Michael Conroy On Monday, Sept. 22, President Donald Trump claimed during a press conference that taking acetaminophen, or Tylenol, while pregnant increases risk of autism in the child. Trump, along with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Mehmet Oz, made many other controversial claims during the conference relating to hepatitis B vaccines, and kids being injected with “horse-sized” vaccines. Since then, a range of experts from across the globe have rejected Trump's claims.  “Available evidence has found no link between the use of paracetamol during pregnancy and autism,” said the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Even the FDA commissioner Marty Makary wrote an open letter to physicians stating that, “Acetaminophen is the safest ov...

Cardboard Connections: Card Show Held in Arizona

By Jackson Melin Twice a year, Tempe, Ariz. is host to the Collectibles on College’s state card show. The show, now going on its 10th anniversary, offers a wide range of collectibles ranging from signed photos to pop figures to packs of Pokémon cards.  “We’re trying to connect and give back to the collectible hobby more,” Collectibles on College Associate Luis Sanchez said. “We want to branch out more than just sports memorabilia, reaching out into different collectibles that maybe you don’t usually see.” 450 tables surrounded the convention, all with different vendors and collectibles. Some tables had games to win small prizes or raffle tickets for bigger rewards. Sports cards tend to dominate the market. Large briefcases full of 2.5x3.5 inch pieces of cardboard on ful...

On Sept. 24, TRIO held a money management workshop at Pima Community College’s West Campus Student Life Center. Valeria Arnold from Hughes Federal Credit Union was the speaker, giving students a short, but thorough, introduction to credit; what it is, how it works, why it’s important, and how to make it “work for you.” She also explained how Hughes Federal Credit Union, and other credit unions, can help you establish and maintain a health money management plan that includes covering your needs, sparing some money for your wants, and contributing to your savings for future plans and emergencies.  After a brief introduction to credit and a...

Renown Tucson Artist Turns 94

By Caroline Hansen On Sept. 25, a celebration was held at The Drawing Studio (TDS) for founder Andrew Rush’s 94th birthday. The party was held in the new gallery space located on Tucson Boulevard, adjacent to TDS’s main space on Glenn Avenue. Several of Rush’s works were showcased and available for purchase with proceeds benefitting the studio. The show was titled “Bodies and Buildings – A Collection Celebrating Andrew Rush at 94.” “This is work that spans from 1961 to 1995 and includes a variety of media: watercolor, ceramics, intaglio printmaking—it just really shows the incredible breadth of this artist’s work, a man who is a visionary,” said Anthony Avila, development manager for TDS.  In 1992 Rush and a group of artist friends opened TDS in Armory Park, an histor...

The Witching Weekly: 10/17

By Ruby Maldonado Hi, everyone! Welcome back to The Witching Weekly! For this week, I wanted to do something calming. School can be a stressful time, and people’s sleep schedules tend to suffer because of it. The recipe for a Deep Sleep Spell Bag should help with that! You can put it under your pillow, or on a nightstand. It’s best to keep it close to you. The fun thing about this particular bag is that you can use what you have, or what you like. Some people don’t like the smell of lavender, so maybe they add more chamomile or blue sage instead!  The way to make our Deep Sleep Bags is to find or make a small pouch, usually a drawstring, and place your intentions into it. This could be meditating or saying it out loud, or even just visualizing what you are trying to achieve....

Thrilling Activism for Upcoming No Kings 2.0

By Caroline Hansen On Saturday, Oct. 18 there will be “No Kings 2.0” protests across the United States. More than 2,200 events are already scheduled. Many participants plan to incorporate fun and creative activities as a way to connect with others and to raise people’s spirits. Here in Tucson two friends will be adding their own creative dash of spooky fun to one of Tucson’s No Kings events, the Defend Tucson, ¡Tucson Se Defiende! (DTSD) rally being held downtown.  Florence Johnson and Margo Itule are involved with local activism and wanted a way to encourage other people to get involved. Their goal was to create a fun project that would bring strangers together for a common cause. They also wanted it to be a healthy activity and something that would get people a little bit ...

This Week’s Past Flood Warnings for Tucson

By Joseph Cunningham Photo from Google Weather Across Arizona this week flood warnings were issued, as long rains were expected to bring 1-3 inches of rain. Tropical moisture continued to increase as Hurricane Priscilla moved closer to Mexico’s west coast. High chances of rain ranging from 50-70% were expected all weekend. While most Tucsonans welcome the rain, they also must be properly prepared. The city and county offered free sandbags at stations around the area. In Tucson sand bags were available at the east Parking Lot of Hi-Corbett Field, 700 S. Randolph Way. The expectation of rain caused the cancellation of events all across the city, such as Phocus Law Steve Paulauskis Memorial Race, at Tucson Dragway on Oct. 11. The AFL (Arizona Fall League) has also cancelled th...

Learning Native History

By Trigo José Marroquin A Yaqui deer dancer. Photo by Brittanica. As a Native person living in Tucson, Ariz., people think I know a lot about Native culture and history. But honestly, I only know the basic history, such as the Mayflower arriving and settlers killing Natives that didn’t comply with their Western ideologies. This is because I grew up outside of the Yaqui Tribe, but I think it’s time to start learning about my people's history. The Yaquis’ primary homelands are in the Río Yaqui Valley in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora. Even to this day, they still live there with my family on the land. Very few still speak the original Sonoran Yaqui language, but it has evolved into the one we have today that many still know and recognize. Because of a mixture of coloni...
