Sweet Tomatoes Exclusively Returns to Tucson

By Steve Forrester Between 2023 and 2024, over twenty different Tucson-area restaurants closed their doors. We’re happy to see that one restaurant has returned with their doors wide open, and not just returned to Tucson, but exclusively returned to our fair city. This restaurant is Sweet Tomatoes, which had its grand re-opening at Broadway and Wilmot on April 1st, 2024. At 11:00 a.m. on that drizzly Monday morning, a long line of guests showed up (the first in line arrived at least an hour early), and all applauded when the doors opened and the line began to slowly step inside the renovated restaurant. The La Fiesta de los Vaqueros (Festival of the Cowboy) is celebrating its 99th year here in the Old Pueblo. It runs from Feb. 17-25. This year’s parade will follow a new route. The new route will begin at South 12th Avenue and West Drexel Road. The route will head east on Drexel to South Nogales Highway. Then it will head north until it reaches East Irvington Road, just before reaching the rodeo grounds. The parade starts at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. Tucson Meet Yourself Celebrates 50th Anniversary

October 13 marks the beginning of Tucson's 50th annual Tucson Meet Yourself event, a free festival which celebrates traditional folk arts by those from the wide variety of cultures that call Tucson home. Participants can experience local music and dance, arts and crafts, and of course, food. Aside from ethnic food from dozens of cultures and other treats such as homemade frybread and foods with native Sonoran desert plants, one of the culinary options this year will be Tucson Meet Yourself’s first ever heritage beer garden, honoring the ancient art of beer brewing and providing samples of heritage brews. Pima Participates in Deaf Awareness Month

By RUTH BEHRPima Post September is Deaf Awareness Month, a time to recognize the unique culture and languages of the Deaf community. The North American Deaf community includes those who are deaf, deafblind, and hard-of-hearing as well as Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs).  According to Gallaudet University, approximately 0.9-2.2% of the US population has what the University refers to as “a severe hearing impairment or is functionally deaf.” While not all those people are part of the Deaf community, Ernest Willman, one of Pima’s American Sign Language professors, is among them. Willman, speaking through an interpreter, says, "I am from a generationally Deaf family. My parents are Deaf and my siblings are also Deaf." While the Deaf community is vast and diverse, they are...
