Soccer player D’Andre Pickett named First Team NJCAA All-American

The Pima Community College men’s soccer program announced November 29, 2023 that defender D’Andre Pickett was named First Team NJCAA Division II All-American. Pickett helped anchor a defense that secured eight shutout victories. He played and started in 16 of the 17 games this season with one goal and four assists, per a press release.. Pickett earned first team All-ACCAC and first team All-Region I, Division II. He was also selected to the NJCAA Division II All-Tournament team.   Photo by Stephanie van Latum

Pima Soccer Players Chosen as Players and Goalkeepers of the Week

Arizona Community College Athletic Conference has chosen Pima Community College women’s soccer players Jessica Alvarez and Adriana Pacheco as players and goalkeepers for the week of Sept 17-23. Alvarez, a freshman midfielder, was selected ACCAC Division II Player of the Week while Pacheco, a sophomore goalkeeper, was named ACCAC Division II Goalkeeper of the Week. Alvarez scored three goals and had one assist for the week. She netted two goals in Pima’s win over GateWay Community College and scored one goal in their win at Paradise Valley Community College. Alvarez has played in five games and has eight points. Pacheco played 104 minutes at the net giving up no goals and had four saves. The Aztecs outscored their opponents 13-2 last week. Mason Lee Wins Both Matches But Aztecs Men’s Tennis Falls at Mesa CC

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College men's tennis team (0-2) played a match on the road on Thursday at Mesa Community College. The No. 16 ranked Aztecs fell to the No. 17 ranked Thunderbirds 6-3. Freshman Mason Lee (Catalina Foothills HS) won both his single and double match-ups on the day. Lee along with No. 1 doubles partner Corey Pabst, defeated Beto Carlon and Cameron Khan 8-4. Lee went on to beat Khan in their No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Landon Strickland provided the other victory for the Aztecs as he won a third-set tiebreaker over Max Beasley 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Kelch, Enriquez and Acevedo Homer as Aztecs Baseball Wins 8th Straight

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College baseball team (18-6) took command early on Thursday in its non-conference game against Community Christian College. The Aztecs defeated the Saints 13-3 in 8 innings as freshman Alec Acevedo (Nogales HS) hit a leadoff walk-off home run to end it with a run-rule victory. The Aztecs did their damage in the early innings as they scored five runs in the 1st and seven runs in the 3rd inning. Pima got on the board in the 1st inning when freshman Bradon Zastrow hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score freshman Parker Schmidt. Aztecs Volleyball Drops Two Matches at Yavapai College

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College volleyball team (0-7) played two matches on Friday at Yavapai College (10-5). Sophomore Aydalis Felix (Rincon HS) totaled 46 digs in the two matches while sophomore Eve Pearson (Canyon del Oro HS) finished the day with 13 kills. Match 1: Yavapai College Roughriders 3, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (25-8, 25-19, 25-16): The Aztecs fell behind early in the first set dropping 13 of the first 16 points but in the second set they took an early lead. With the score tied at 6-6, the Roughriders scored five straight points to take the lead for good. Photo by Raymond Suarez By Nate Martinez The men and women’s golf team kicked their season off with the Mesa Invitational Tournament on February 15-16. Overall, the men’s team failed to place. However, freshman Connor Wierman from Ironwood Ridge High School finished in 16th place individually. He posted a score of 76 on the first day and 73 the next. Andrew Rivas, the freshman from Canyon Del Oro High School, finished 24th overall, shooting an impressive par 72 on his first day. He struggled on the second day, shooting an 81 for an overall of 153. Sophomore Jackson Williams, also from Ironwood Ridge, put up a score of 193.  The women’s team had a lackluster day as well. Pima student athletes given new life after lost season

By Nate Martinez By now, one would have to be living under a rock to not know that COVID-19 really hindered college athletics. Many student athletes in the United States had their seasons cut drastically short thanks to the virus. For some, this is heartbreaking, but they can look forward to another chance to play next season. For others, this may have been the last year of eligibility to make one more run at a potential championship.  Things seemed to have hit an all time low for student athletes across the United States until a recent decision by the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association).
