Twin Peaks Stars Reflect on Rialto Theatre Stage

By Patrick Molina and Marlon Bedoy Photos by Marlon Bedoy On Oct. 15th, Tucson’s very own Rialto Theatre hosted the event “Twin Peaks: Conversation with the Stars,” a multi-city tour celebrating the iconic series by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The tour kicked off in August and included cities such as Boston, Denver and Seattle to name a few. As the doors opened around 5:50 p.m., the energy of the crowd was already vivid.  Fans showed a huge appreciation for the show and what it discusses. Chrestine Clawley described the show as  “...an amazing, timeless series with themes of, you know, philosophy, psychology, spirituality and the occult…” The show is still bringing new fans, like Ethan Kiggins who first watched it six months before the event.  Right when ente...

Student Spotlight: Trevor Russell

By Jaymes M. Grace  Photo from PacificF2000 Racing Young entrepreneur balances books, business and the race track  This week’s “Student Spotlight” is on Trevor Russell!  TUCSON, ARIZ. — Most 20-year-olds are juggling classes and part-time jobs, but Trevor Russell has added a few more items to his plate: running his own car repair business, maintaining a 3.5 GPA at Pima Community College and competing as a champion race car driver.  Behind the wheel of his red Formula 4 race car, Russell has proven he's as skilled on the track as he is in the classroom and the garage. What makes his story even more remarkable is that he's largely self-taught in both racing and automotive repair.  "I just started figuring things out on my own," Russell said of his ea...

This Feminist Perspective

by Jaymes M. Grace Welcome to my column on all things Feminist! Trust, it’s a lot! Or at least it should be. I shared with my editor that when I woke up yesterday morning—I actually woke up thinking “I want to write about Feminism!”  Additionally, I was perplexed as to why I haven’t been doing that all along?  Well, for whatever reason—no matter, we are here now. I’m here and you are here. And the next time you return, bring a friend. And I too will invite someone; and before you know it there will be a bunch of us, all hanging around talking about all things! Yes, I’m just gonna leave it there, all things. We can pick that up when we return in the Spring. But for now, take a break and indulge in some restorative rest.  I’ll be here when you get back. People thi...

Fall Student Welcome kicks off new school year with energy and community

By Annadi Talla Clip from flyer for PCC's New Student Welcome, by PCC Student Life Pima Community College’s Fall Student Welcome brought excitement, connection and community spirit to the Downtown Campus on Friday, Oct. 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event featured mariachi music performed by Pima students, pumpkin decorating, face painting, games, free food, a chance to win a prize and opportunities for students to connect with clubs, programs and campus resources.  According to West Campus Student Life Coordinator Nikaylie Federico, the goal of the event was to “help students feel more connected with the community by allowing them to meet other students—new, returning and continuing—to make them feel more comfortable going out to things outside of the classroom.” Th...

The Witching Weekly: 12/20

By Ruby Maldonado Hey everyone! Welcome back to the Witching Weekly! Not only will this week be quite different, but it will also be the last column until mid-late January. I’m taking some time over winter break to do some new things and work on all my unfinished crochet projects and all the books I want to read! But that also means that I’ll have more time for personal readings or tips, so if that’s something you’re interested in, please reach out! For this week, I will not be doing a tarot reading. I wanted to talk about some easy, everyday or once a week rituals that anyone can do. I think one of the biggest things that keeps people from starting a journey in witchcraft is thinking that they’re not doing it “aesthetically” enough, that if it doesn’t look like the Pinterest wit...

What to know about feral cats during the winter months

By Rory Archer TUCSON, ARIZ. — In the spring, I often sat on my back patio late at night, working on my astronomy project: tracking the movement of the sky across hours, days and weeks. For me, this meant going out around 2 a.m. and drawing a projection of the moon’s location throughout the week. This task became much more enticing once I noticed a black cat that would often cross my yard at that hour, nearly every night. Even after I finished my project, I often asked my roommate to let me know if he was going outside to smoke, so I could go with him to leave cat food out. It started out as an occasional sighting of a black cat, and slowly became a nightly appearance of different cats. In the summer, an orange cat would often curl up by my feet as I read, and in the fall, a fluff...

Garbage gives a ‘Happy Ending’ to their tour in Arizona

By Rory Archer PHOENIX — Nov. 2 marked the penultimate concert of Garbage’s “Happy Endings” tour, promoting their latest album “Let All That We Imagine Be The Light.” The 32-year-old rock band played at The Van Buren, a popular, medium-sized standing room venue in downtown Phoenix.  “This is sort of technically—well, not technically, but it is in at least me as a person living in LA—This is our last show of this year. We've got one more show to play in Los Angeles, but that's not till next week, in the middle of next week. So to me this feels like the end of this incredible tour,” said lead singer Shirley Manson during the show. Most shows on the band’s North American tour were opened by the glam rock band Starcrawler. Starcrawler quickly caught the crowd’s attention with ...

Native myths: Windagos, continued

Trigo Jose Marroquin The popularized version of the Wendigo vs an illustration of the original Wendigo. Courtesy of David J. Jo. With the topic of skinwalkers we've talked about, I've mentioned Windago. With Hollywood’s depiction of Windagos, you probably see them as moose or deer and/or a monster on two legs with antlers on their head with a deer skull and/or deer shape. But in the myths, they are said to be a spirit or perhaps a walking skeleton. There are three of the Windago. The first one is from the movies. We all know about it. We love them, we know them, and they aren't that far from the truth. The modern-day "Wendigo" is said to have control over the cold, with the ability to mimic human voices, leading people to the forest to kill and eat them. It is probably the mos...

President Trump goes on “racist” rant directed at Somali people

By Joseph Cunningham Photo: ANDREW CABALLERO-REYNOLDS / AFP / Getty Images Last week on Dec. 2 during a cabinet briefing, President Donald Trump went on a rather racially charged rant, directed at the people of Somalia while discussing alleged fraud in social service systems. Calling them “garbage,” Trump expressed his desire to get Somalis out, whether they were legally here or not.  Making comments that Somalia is “considered by many to be the worst country on earth,” he also claimed that Minneapolis shouldn’t be proud to have the largest Somali population, and that the Somalian population has destroyed Minnesota. “I wouldn’t be proud to have the largest Somalian [population]. Look at their nation, look how bad their nation is, it's not even a nation, just people wal...
