Tucson Meet Yourself Celebrates 50th Anniversary

October 13 marks the beginning of Tucson's 50th annual Tucson Meet Yourself event, a free festival which celebrates traditional folk arts by those from the wide variety of cultures that call Tucson home. Participants can experience local music and dance, arts and crafts, and of course, food. Aside from ethnic food from dozens of cultures and other treats such as homemade frybread and foods with native Sonoran desert plants, one of the culinary options this year will be Tucson Meet Yourself’s first ever heritage beer garden, honoring the ancient art of beer brewing and providing samples of heritage brews. Pima Participates in Deaf Awareness Month

By RUTH BEHRPima Post September is Deaf Awareness Month, a time to recognize the unique culture and languages of the Deaf community. The North American Deaf community includes those who are deaf, deafblind, and hard-of-hearing as well as Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs).  According to Gallaudet University, approximately 0.9-2.2% of the US population has what the University refers to as “a severe hearing impairment or is functionally deaf.” While not all those people are part of the Deaf community, Ernest Willman, one of Pima’s American Sign Language professors, is among them. However, colorful crystals have never really been my forte.  For people who might feel the same way, there is another show that has been running in Tucson for the past 20 years: the Tucson Reptile and Amphibian Show. What is known as a fish taco or a shrimp taco, isn’t made willy nilly with any kind of fish or shrimp. Nor with random powers and any kind of tortilla. It is not a simple taco. It is also a standalone district outside of the other states, and it’s the capital of the country.  Perhaps equally important, it is arguably the home of the best al pastor tacos.  It is a taco rooted in history and cultural heritage. Its original conception was introduced by Lebanese immigrants who arrived in Mexico. It was a remix of a homeland dish — with the traditional anatomy substituted with ingredients found in the region. Pima club to help homeless— and you can, too

By EMILY GASTELUMPima Post Volunteers are needed as Pima Honors Club is hosting RISE 2022 March 17 and 18 to help the homeless. The Honors Club is looking for volunteers to make care packages as well as to be a community resource and to provide food for the needy.  The club will host a meeting from 3 to 4 p.m. March 15 to discuss the planning of future meetings for RISE. Those who are interested can check out the Pima Engage link to join via Zoom. Volunteers can report at noon until 3 p.m. March 17 at the Amethyst Room in Downtown Campus for the set-up of the event, which will include making the care packages.
