Has Remote Learning Worked?

Photo by Andrew Neel By Raymond Moreno In an article for the Wall Street Journal, reporters Tawnell D. Hobbs and Lee Hawkins make the case that remote learning has not worked for students. Hobbs and Hawkins argue that teachers who never used remote learning are, like their students, new to it and have to adapt their teachings to others for them to have a better understanding of the course. Valeria Miranda, a 21 year old Interpreter Major, wasn’t really fond of remote learning. She said she doesn’t like remote learning because she feels like she gets less information from Zoom meetings as opposed to traditional in-person class time and needs more “one on one” time. “When it comes to in person learning I learn more because I’m more of a hands on learner,” she said....

Pima Community College Governing Board member Catherine Ripley By Kyler Van Vliet Catherine Ripley has spent her life traversing the world working as a U.S. diplomat, counter-terrorism strategist, professor and – for a few months – as a bassist. This January, Ripley started her new career as a member of the Pima Community College Board of Governors, representing District 1 in Arizona. She won the general election last November in 2020 against Ethan Orr with a campaign focused on increasing enrollment through formal partnerships with local High Schools, the JTED Program and the Earn to Learn Programs. A fully electric Dodge Firebird (Kyler Van Vliet) By Kyler Van Vliet On Wednesday, the Tucson Electric Vehicle Association (TEVA) held an electric vehicle car show to bring awareness to Earth Day and a bigger car show being held on Saturday, April 24. The event, held in the parking lot of Pima’s Downtown Campus, had several electric vehicles on display including an electric-converted Pontiac Firebird, a Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt and various Tesla Models — all personal vehicles of event volunteers. One person at the event was TEVA’s public relations and outreach representative Jerry Asher, also known as EV Jerry. Aztecs Baseball Sweeps Paradise Valley CC For 10th Straight Win

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College baseball team (20-6, 13-5 in ACCAC) continued its hot streak on Saturday as the Aztecs scored 25 runs to overwhelm Paradise Valley Community College (2-23, 2-16). Freshman Jose Enriquez was a force at the plate as he finished the day 5 for 8 with seven RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) was 5 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs while freshman Daniel Durazo (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 4 for 6 with two RBIs and a run. Arizona House Passes Bill Allowing Community Colleges to Offer 4-year Degree Programs

By Kevin Murphy On February 22, the Arizona House passed HB2523 by a vote of 57-3, which would allow community colleges to offer 4 year degrees. This is the first time ever that a bill advocating for four-year degrees being offered at community colleges has passed the Arizona House. If passed in the State Senate, the bill would require community colleges interested in offering 4 year degrees to conduct multi-year studies funded by local tax revenues to determine if they would be eligible to hire the required faculty and sustain four-year programs. While other state colleges have backed the bill going forward, Pima Community College has not advocated for or against it. Ballesteros Hits Walk-Off RBI Single as Aztecs Baseball Sweeps Yavapai College

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College baseball team (14-6, 9-5 in ACCAC) earned its second straight ACCAC sweep on Saturday as it defeated Yavapai College (12-11, 7-7). Freshman Romeo Ballesteros (Salpointe Catholic HS) provided some clutch hitting going 3 for 6 with three RBIs. Freshman Parker Schmidt finished the day 2 for 8 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomores Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) and Terrell Huggins (Cienega HS) did their damage at the plate in the second game.
