Worst of the worst, rated by Razzies

By ANGEL CANEZ The 40th anniversary of the Golden Raspberry Awards is soon upon us to award the worst Tinseltown has offered.  2019’s list of losers includes: “A Madea Family Funeral,” marking Tyler Perry’s fourth Razzie  nomination; John Travolta’s star turn in “The Fanatic”; horror thriller “The Haunting of Sharon Tate” starring Hillary Duff; PTSD-addled super soldier John Rambo in “Rambo: Last Blood”; and finally, “Cats.”  “THE FANATIC” I started my weekend of darkness with “The Fanatic.” The film marks Fred Durst’s -- the lead singer of Limp Bizkit -- directorial debut and the movie was as bad as his music. John Travolta, in poor taste, plays an ice cream-loving superfan with autism-turned-scary stalker of his favorite action hero Hunter Dunbar. Trovolta’s character doesn’t even ha...

By ANGEL CANEZ   Aztec Volleyball is being led by Madi Nash, a 19-year-old sophomore star outside hitter from Tucson’s Sahuaro High School.  Nash has a lifelong love for the sport of volleyball. She comes from a family of volleyball players: Her older sister Morgan Nash plays D-2 volleyball for Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri, and her twin, Abi, plays D-1 volleyball for Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.   Nash leads the team leader in kills (volleyball version on scoring a point) and is ranked 60th in the nation in kills per set at 2.7.   Nash gave a lot of credit for her improvement this year to Carla Garrett, Pima’s strength and conditioning coach.   “I think my physicality has improved a lot, and I feel like I started jumping a lot higher than I did l...

The game is afoot at Pima

by ANGEL CANEZ Pima Community College Center for the Arts is putting on a production of “Baskerville,” which is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1902 classic Sherlock Holmes novel “The Hounds of the Baskervilles,” along with touches of comedy in their audience-interactive murder-mystery tale.  “Sherlock is a timeless story,” director Chris Will said. “So it’s always fun to tell a Sherlock Holmes story, and it was going to challenge the students because they have to play multiple characters. “It’s a real challenge for them to switch really quick back and forth from one character to another,” Will added. “Sometimes the actors are having the same conversion with themselves as a different character. It’s a really challenging and fun experience.” The role of Dr. Watson will take a slightly...

Helping others find their peace of mind

Story and photos by ANGEL CANEZ Self-care and mental health aren’t issues that are subtly brought up.  The number of college students who have reported depression has more than doubled since the year 2000, according to the American College Health Association in October. These are stressful times for students right now around midterms.  However, Pima Community College offered a helping hand to those in need. A self-care event took place on Feb. 19 at the Downtown Campus to address these concerns. The event was directed by sophomore student senators Cindy Leonard and Casey Hohbein.  “We wanted to give back to the students because we were selected to help the students and we felt this was the best way to do that,” Hohbein said.  The wellness event was targeted to students going throug...
