Aztecs close out season as runners-up

By ANGEL CANEZ   Pima Community College wrapped up the 2019 volleyball season on a positive note.. The Aztecs finished as runner ups at the NJCAA region I division II finals. Losing in straight sets to the fourth ranked team in the nation and conference rival the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes who are riding a 22 game win streak and the fourth seed in the Division II National Tournament. The Aztecs ended the season above .500 for the second season in a row with a record of 15-14 and a 8-7 in conference record. The aztecs mirrored last season with almost identical record as the team finished last season at 16-15 and was also came up short in the NJCAA Region I, Division II finals game last season. Nash helps lead Pima Volleyball on the court.

By ANGEL CANEZ   Aztec Volleyball is being led by Madi Nash, a 19-year-old sophomore star outside hitter from Tucson’s Sahuaro High School.  Nash has a lifelong love for the sport of volleyball. She comes from a family of volleyball players: Her older sister Morgan Nash plays D-2 volleyball for Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri, and her twin, Abi, plays D-1 volleyball for Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.   Nash leads the team leader in kills (volleyball version on scoring a point) and is ranked 60th in the nation in kills per set at 2.7.   Nash gave a lot of credit for her improvement this year to Carla Garrett, Pima’s strength and conditioning coach.   “I think my physicality has improved a lot, and I feel like I started jumping a lot higher than I did l...

Season Ends at regional finals for Pima Volleyball

By ANGEL CANEZ A lot was on the line Nov. 3 for the Pima Community College Volleyball team.  The Aztecs had their season and a trip to Nationals in West Virginia in their grasp. They were only a win away, but their season’s biggest foe stood in their path.   The Aztecs found themselves in a rematch with the tournament’s opening match against South Mountain Community College. The Cougars came out and showed why they were the No. 1 seed, beating the Aztecs in three straight sets 25-22, 25-16, 25-19. That effectively put an end to the Aztecs’ season, who finished the season 16-15. “I am very happy and excited for our players to end the season they way we did this year,” said coach Dan Bithell. “We absolutely played our best volleyball in the Region Tournament, and that was one of our big ...

Aztecs win 2 out of 3 but still continue to struggle  

The Aztec volleyball team seems to be getting on the right track finally. Winning two of their last three matches over the past two weeks from Sep. 27 to Oct. 4 after dropping four in a row and seven of their last eight  bringing their total record to 6-10. BY ANGEL CANEZ Pima Community College Volleyball team, wrapped up the regular season on a high note (14-13) putting together a string of wins before the playoffs begin next week. “Finishing the regular season with two wins at home was very exciting and very gratifying for our sophomores,” Dan Bithell Volleyball head coach said.  As the Aztecs put an end to the Scottsdale Community College Artichokes season, winning in four sets. Aztecs dig in for the long haul

By ARMANDO HARMON   After a tough loss to a juggernaut of a team No. 8 South Mountain, the Aztecs looked to bounce back with a series of non-conference wins.   The Aztecs took a little break from the desert heat and spent a weekend in the city founded by the Germans found in 1904.
