The government shut down when congress was unable to come up with a new spending plan to be signed into law. Specifically in the senate, Republicans were unable to secure the 60 votes necessary to pass the GOP spending bill. This was because democrats want the GOP bill to include extensions to crucial tax credits for medicare. These tax credits under the Affordable Care Act are estimated to help upwards of 4 million Americans keep their insurance, as many of these people make too much for medicare, however not enough for full-premium insurance.  The elderly would be hurt worse with insurance premiums increasing with age due to increased health ...

The United States Department of Agriculture suspended the issuance of November 2025 SNAP benefits. This program is referred to as Nutrition Assistance (NA) in Arizona. By Diedra Eby On Oct. 7, PCC’s Creative Writing Club had its first meeting. Faculty advisors M Bennet and Harmony Sedgwick lead the meeting. Approximately 35 students attended. Snacks were provided, as were copies of the exquisite “SandScript Art & Literature 2025”.  “SandScript” is Pima Community College’s student-run publication, published since 1990 – making it one of the longest-running community college publications in the country. For five years in a row, “SandScript Art & Literature” has won the annual national contest for Collegiate Magazine’s Community College Humanities Association’s “Best Magazine” award. Oak Flats Spiritual Site Under Threat

By Joseph Cunningham Photo by Cheryl Evans/The Republic Sixty miles west outside of Phoenix is a place called Oak Flats. Oak Flats has been the subject of legal battles for close to 10 years now. In 2013, two of the largest mining companies in the world came together to create a mining operation in Arizona. These companies were BHP and RioTinto, forming the project Resolution Copper, with the goal to acquire 2,422 acres of land within Oak Flats.  However, there are several problems with this plan, one such being that the land is a holy site for the native Apache Tribe, and should be protected under religious freedoms. Photo by Rory Archer. TUCSON, ARIZ. — The Tucson Roadrunners won their season’s third game and home-opener with a final 5-4 in overtime on Saturday, Oct. 18th against the Calgary Wranglers. The start of this season marks the tenth anniversary of the Tucson Roadrunners moving from Springfield, Mass., to Tucson, Ariz. The home-opener game started with its usual 4 p.m. tailgate and “red carpet” walk for players. Arena doors opened at 6 p.m., an hour before puck drop. There was an estimated 5,547 in attendance. By Quinn Smalley In November 2024, Tucson was dealt a bittersweet blow to its sweet-tooth. Cal’s Bakeshop announced on Instagram that it would be closing its cottage bakeshop in early 2025. At first, it seemed as though Caleb “Cal” Orellana, the owner of Cal’s Bakeshop, was bidding Tucson a permanent goodbye. But the caption for the post was later edited to tease a brick-and-mortar location opening. Oct. 11 and 12, 2025, served as the grand opening weekend for Cal’s Bakeshop, a mostly vegan bakery that originally operated out of Orellana’s kitchen during the pandemic. Now located inside the building that Rocco’s Little Chicago called home for 25 years, the bakeshop is back and just as delicious as ever.
