Pima welcomes robotics with open ARMs

By ANGEL CANEZ Pima intends to take some big steps into the future by working on the first Center of Excellence at the Downtown Campus. Earlier this month, Pima was awarded the (Pathways for Success) Title III Grant l from the Department of Education. There are plans to open centers, centered on IT, health care, art, culinary and hospitality, and public safety and security according to Ana Grief but she did not give a specific timeline as to when. PCC recently bought and cleared what used to be part of the Fortuna Inn for 1.35 million dollars adjacent to the Downtown Campus. That marks the thred hotel that pima has bought for the expansion of the Center of excalines, the other two being the Tucson inn and the southend area of the Fortuna inn.  Ana Grief, PCC business development prog...

‘Tartuffe’: Love, lies and a pious disguise

BY PARKER BROCK Pima Community College Theatre will present “Tartuffe,” a classic tale with romance and sardonic humor. The production, which will run Nov. 8-18, is directed by Pima’s new theater arts faculty, Chris Will. “Tartuffe” presents the tale set during the life of King Louis XVI with a modern message. The story is set in the home of the wealthy Orgon, where Tartuffe — a fraud and a pious imposter — has infiltrated the Orgon estate. He wins Orgon’s favor, then attempts to marry his daughter, seduce his wife and steal the deed to the property. “This production is different from others because its a classical story told in a modern way,” Will said. “What's great is the topics that were written hundreds of years ago still have relevance today.” The message of “Tartuffe” is ...

Propping up Arizona

By PARKER BROCK   The propositions that will be on the ballot will be proposing new laws, and amendments to the state constitution will have lasting effects on the state’s economy and revenue generation. The general election, which will take place Nov. 6, will have five propositions. Here’s a guide most of the propositions to make an informed decision on which proposition to vote for. Proposition 305 This would initiate state Senate Bill 1431, which passed in 2017 and would increase the amount of recipients eligible to receive an empowerment scholarship account. This voucher system would affect predominantly low-income students from kindergarten through Grade 12. The account would allow for spending toward “tuition, textbooks, educational therapies, tutoring, or other qualified...

Aztecs wrap up best season in school history

By KYLE MCDANIEL   The Aztecs are on to the NJCAA District I Semifinals against Laramie County Community College, and will be playing that game at their home stadium Kino Sports Complex. If they win that game, they will play in the NJCAA District I finals the next night. With a win there, they would be headed to Nationals in Daytona, Florida starting November 12.   Oct 27 NJCAA Region I, Division I Finals vs. Chandler-Gilbert CC 0, PCC 2   Thanks to sophomore Hugo Kametani’s second half brace the Aztecs won their fourth NJCAA Region I, Division I in the last five years. The game was a defensive battle especially in the first half when both teams were committing a lot of fouls.   Helping Pima to another shutout victory was freshman defender Martin Cardenas who...

Kametani named ACCAC player of the year

BY KYLE MCDANIEL   Sophomore and team captain Hugo Kametani helped the Aztecs this season record their best regular season in team history. He finished the regular season with 22 goals and 5 assists. He also was recently awarded the ACCAC/Region 1 Player of the Year award and was selected first team All-ACCAC/NJCAA Region I. Since he is playing like the world is on fire I felt it would be great to get his story and get to know him.   He is from Kashima, Japan which is a coastal city roughly in the middle of the country, and is roughly 57 miles from Tokyo. Which of course means his favorite soccer team is the Kashima Antlers, who play in the J-League, which is Japan’s top division. They are also one of the most successful teams in Japan’s history.   Japan is quite a d...

Male Sexual Assault can be an issue, too

BY KYLE MCDANIEL   According to www.nsvrc.org/statistics, only 9 percent of rape and sexual assault victims are male, which is a telling fact. I read and hear all the time that women are afraid to speak up, but it is a hundred times worse for males, because males look at sex differently.   If I reported that I was raped, my friends would be laughing hysterically. They would say things like, “Dude, you got to have sex with a woman, why you complaining?” but if you didn’t want to and they forced you into it, that is sexual assault.   The definition of sexual assault according to criminal.findlaw.com, is any crime in which the offender subjects the victim to sexual touching that is unwanted and offensive.   It doesn’t help that a lot of the crime shows on networ...

The Beginning of the End by Kyle McDaniel

By Kyle McDaniel   As you can tell there will be a reason for the writing of this article as it stems from a personal experience of mine, an experience that had everything you would need to create an Oscar winning film.   One day I noticed an employee who I thought was absolutely gorgeous, crying her eyes out and the gentleman I am, I decided to hand her a note that read, smile you’re beautiful. Later that night I asked her to dinner, she said yes and gave me her number.   It’s the night of the dinner and I got all dressed up to go, I picked her up and we enjoyed a wonderful meal, just talking, getting to know each other. Then when it’s time to take her home, she states “Can you take me to Josh’s house?”, of course I said yes, it is the first night anything her heart d...

Last call for Pima football at home

Story by HANK ROBICHAUD  Photos by HANK ROBICHAUD, MADYSON HOWARTH and JOE GIDDENS It’s like this every time Pima Community College plays Eastern Arizona College, according to Head coach Jim Monaco’s wife, Dannielle Monaco.  She said she fainted when the two teams faced off a couple years ago from how close and exciting that game was.   It’s been that kind of week, both on and off the field in the twilight of Pima Football. Monaco was named Pima Community College’s new Acting Athletics Director on Oct. 29.  This comes after the Aztecs played the program’s final home game on Oct. 27. They faced off against No. 9 Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters. It was a close and chippy game throughout but the Aztecs outlasted the Gila Monsters in the end, when Jake Smith blocked a literal last-seco...

Kudos to Pima cops

By CHRISTOPHER ALBERS  The Pima Community College Police Department was honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving for being the top fundraising law enforcement agency for the 5K run/walk event on Sept. 22.  This is PCCPD’s first year participating. A big shout out goes to Officer Eugene Edgerson who organized this event and also was honored by MADD as the top fundraising individual.    I am hopeful that next year we can raise even more money and bring more personnel to the event.  Thank you to all who took the time to participate, most of all to Edgerson for taking the initiative to make this happen.  Great job!

Testing, Testing 1 2 3. Is this thing on?

By JOE GIDDENS Kim Stevens has been working for Pima Community College since 2000 in registration and admission seasonally.  Later, she became full time in 2003, and has been at the West Campus Testing Center and Testing Center as a student service technician ever since.  We sat down with Stevens for an interview about the West Campus.  Q: About how many people use the testing center?  A: “It varies … sometimes we have 100 or more. During the midterms and finals, we could have 300, 400.” Q: Are there any outside groups that have your proctor their tests?  A: “We do have other community colleges and universities that do use our campus because there’s a lot of online courses nowadays.” Q: So, online courses for like the University of Arizona might have you proctor an exam? A: “Yeah,...
