Pima Football en route to C.H.A.M.P.S.

Story by HANK ROBICHAUD Photos by MADYSON HOWARTH Even with the rough ending to the regular season, the Aztecs are bowl bound. The bowl game is C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl. The game will be played Dec. 1, at ISD Stadium, in Waco, Texas, versus the Kilgore College Rangers. For the final regular season game in Aztecs’ football history, the Aztecs hit the road to Yuma to take on the Arizona Western College Matadors. The No. 16-ranked Aztecs fell just a bit short in a back-and-forth battle with the Matadors by the final score of 24-20. Last call for Pima football at home

Story by HANK ROBICHAUD Photos by HANK ROBICHAUD, MADYSON HOWARTH and JOE GIDDENS It’s like this every time Pima Community College plays Eastern Arizona College, according to Head coach Jim Monaco’s wife, Dannielle Monaco. She said she fainted when the two teams faced off a couple years ago from how close and exciting that game was. It’s been that kind of week, both on and off the field in the twilight of Pima Football. Monaco was named Pima Community College’s new Acting Athletics Director on Oct. 29. This comes after the Aztecs played the program’s final home game on Oct. 27. They faced off against No. 9 Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters. There’s gold in them there skies

By HANK ROBICHAUD New student apartments in Tucson: A statement that will thrill some and dismay others. In recent years, an influx of student apartments have been built around Downtown Tucson, including on the University of Arizona campus. The UA, however, is not expecting an increase in enrollment, because it capped the acceptance to the university. The university is attempting to have off-campus housing but still have the college environment that are essentially off-campus apartment-style dorms. This could be taking away from some of the Fourth Avenue culture that Tucson is known for. Brooks Ringer, the Aztecs’ gunslinger

By Hank Robichaud Brooks Ringer, a 19-year-old freshman quarterback from Orem, Utah, recently had an amazing game against Phoenix College, on Sept. 22 completing 22 of 30 passes and throwing for 457 yards. This performance of Ringer earned him NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week. Ringer moved here this year to be a part of the Aztecs’ football program. A short time (two games) after the move, Brooks was named the starter and he did not look back. “I had a great battle between the two, and that was really hard,” said Glenn Posey, Pima’s offensive coordinator. “In the first game, Maquis started the first quarter and Brooks came in in the second. There are no chips and guacamole here, but it is the closest thing you will get to eating at a taco stand in Mexico. In Tucson, Juanitos, which is located in a building with a purple exterior on the corner of Grant Road and 15th Avenue, is a great place to unwind and get a filling lunch or dinner made from scratch. In 1986, Juanitos started as a food truck in Van Nuys, California, and grew into a free-standing building in 1987 in the San Fernando Valley. Aztecs devour their veggies

By HANK ROBICHAUD Pima Community College football team had its home opener on Sept. 29, defeating the No. 4 Scottsdale Artichokes. The Artichokes came into the game with a 4-0 record, while Pima came in 2-1. The Aztecs’ defense played great all night, however, and caused four turnovers. Sophomore Macarius Blount brought in two interceptions, while sophomore Christian Maddoux had one. Leonard Lee had the biggest of them all to change the momentum of the game for the Aztecs. “I try and put in hours of film study a week also what we did was we try to disguise our coverages a lot,” defensive back Lee said. “I ended up dropping to the deep third, saw the seam route coming, and I jumped it.” Pima’s offense couldn’t get it going early in the first half, only scoring the one touch...
