Pima Selects New Director of Military and Veterans Services

Pima Community College has selected Alissa McKaig as its new Director of Military and Veterans Services, according to an email from Vice Chancellor for External Relations Phil Burdick. Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Retired (Ret.) McKaig is a native of Westmont, NJ. She graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and received her commission as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the university’s Reserve Officer Training Program (ROTC) in 2000. Commissioned into the Army Aviation Branch, Alissa’s first operational assignment was at Fort Hood, Texas, where she served as Company Executive Officer and Platoon Leader, 2nd Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized). Pima Soccer Players Chosen as Players and Goalkeepers of the Week

Arizona Community College Athletic Conference has chosen Pima Community College women’s soccer players Jessica Alvarez and Adriana Pacheco as players and goalkeepers for the week of Sept 17-23. Alvarez, a freshman midfielder, was selected ACCAC Division II Player of the Week while Pacheco, a sophomore goalkeeper, was named ACCAC Division II Goalkeeper of the Week. Alvarez scored three goals and had one assist for the week. She netted two goals in Pima’s win over GateWay Community College and scored one goal in their win at Paradise Valley Community College. Alvarez has played in five games and has eight points. Pacheco played 104 minutes at the net giving up no goals and had four saves. The Aztecs outscored their opponents 13-2 last week. Pima Chooses New Chief Culture Impact Officer

By RUTH BEHRPima Post Pima Community College announced September 23, 2023 that it has chosen Dr. Brian Stewart to be its new Chief Culture Impact Officer. Stewart has been with the the College for 25 years. He is a registered nurse in Arizona and has degrees in Fine Arts, Nursing and a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Learning Science. During Fall 2022, he took on the role of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for the College. Stewart will also remain in his role as Vice President at Northwest Campus.

Pima Participates in Deaf Awareness Month

By RUTH BEHRPima Post September is Deaf Awareness Month, a time to recognize the unique culture and languages of the Deaf community. The North American Deaf community includes those who are deaf, deafblind, and hard-of-hearing as well as Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs). According to Gallaudet University, approximately 0.9-2.2% of the US population has what the University refers to as “a severe hearing impairment or is functionally deaf.” While not all those people are part of the Deaf community, Ernest Willman, one of Pima’s American Sign Language professors, is among them. Pima kicks off its Fall 2023 semester

By RUTH BEHRPima Post The start of the Fall 2023 semester has brought 17,899 students to Pima Community College to pursue their passions through higher education, according to Pima’s Executive Director of Community and Government Relations, Libby Howell. Pima's diverse student body contains a wide variety of experiences and interests, but one thing they share is their decision to attend Pima this Fall. Students return to classes at the West campus, September 8, 2023. Second-degree learns: Hector Rodriguez returns to Pima for another degree

Surprisingly, some students choose to return for a second degree. Hector Rodriguez is an alumnus at Pima and currently is studying Archaeology. A storied man and a hard worker for a local Home Depot, his presence on West Campus that day was confident. My parents, my step-sister and I, were staying in an Airbnb in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Despite the old and rugged feeling of the building, it became a comfortable haven from the frigid cold of the early mornings. My step-sister and her father were early risers, so they went and got coffee for us while we slept. Once everyone was awake, we decided on brunch at the Reunion Café. It was a short but harrowing walk to the café. Apparently, street fights are common throughout Manhattan. I witnessed my first one on the way to brunch.
