Luis Gonzalez, District 5 candidate

By NORA THOMPSON If elected, Luis Gonzalez will be taking the seat of Luis Gonzalez, who will be retiring this year. No, that’s not a mistake: Both men share the same names. In fact, the two are even friends. Gonzalez said that he was urged to run by the other Luis Gonzalez. “Luis Gonzalez is a friend of mine, and we were talking and he said he would be retiring soon, so it became an opportunity that was available to me,” Gonzalez said. The other Gonzalez, the one currently on the board, gave a quote about his friend,  “I support Luis Gonzalez because he is eminently qualified and well prepared to serve on the Pima College Board of Governors,” he said. “He has dedicated his entire career to the education of young people. Luis is a person of integrity, has a high moral compass and c...

Brewers will brew up World Series win

By RENE ESCOBAR October is the month of pumpkin spice, ghost and ghouls, but more importantly, playoff baseball. As Major League Baseball writes its final chapters of the 2018 season, there remains one unknown: the World Series champions. That remains undetermined for the moment. With the pennant set, 10 teams have an opportunity. Alas, only one can claim the trophy. In my opinion, the one team in this year’s playoff that has never risen a Commissioner’s Trophy, the Milwaukee Brewers, will win the World Series Championship. The Brewers have the mix any championship team needs, a legitimate defense with a bullpen that can pitch the lights out. The Brewers also have the projected Most Valuable Player outfielder Christian Yelich. The bats of the Brewers are scary, starting with Yelich. H...

PCC gets makeover for its 50th anniversary

By AMARIS ENCINAS Pima Community College has decided to take the next step in revitalizing its brand as its 50th anniversary approaches. To aid in this endeavor, in January Pima hired Stamats Communications Incorporated, a higher education marketing company based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Stamats Inc. is in charge developing the “creative” in Pima’s new brand. This is what the new brand would look like, feel like and have its targeted audience receive the message in a way that was still authentic to Pima.  Vice President for Client Services at Stamats, Beatrice Szalas says, “I am just so excited to be getting a chance to work with Pima you know, since I live here in Tucson,  my company is nationwide so I have had a chance to work with other colleges and universities across the country, and...

Brooks Ringer, the Aztecs’ gunslinger

By Hank Robichaud Brooks Ringer, a 19-year-old freshman quarterback from Orem, Utah, recently had an amazing game against Phoenix College, on Sept. 22 completing 22 of 30 passes and throwing for 457 yards. This performance of Ringer earned him NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week. Ringer moved here this year to be a part of the Aztecs’ football program. A short time (two games) after the move, Brooks was named the starter and he did not look back. “I had a great battle between the two, and that was really hard,” said Glenn Posey, Pima’s offensive coordinator. “In the first game, Maquis started the first quarter and Brooks came in in the second. We did that the second game, too, and they were neck and neck. Then the third game, he took full grasp of the job, and as a coach that’s what y...

Aztec’s catching fire at the right time

By KYLE MCDANIEL   The #4 Aztecs are on a seven game win streak heading into their clash with the #11 team in the country. During the win streak they have outscored opponents 27 to 4. If they win their final three games it might propel them to 3rd or higher in the nation. To this point in the season Pima have scored 62 goals while only allowing 11. They have had 15 different goal scorers, with four players having at least 5 goals, but the overall leader is sophomore Hugo Kametani with 19.   Oct. 13 vs. Mesa CC 0, PCC 3   With this victory over the Thunderbirds, it gave the Aztecs the season sweep. This is the fourth year in a row that Pima has swept the season series against Mesa. Freshman Itsuki Ishihara got the scoring started with his goal in the first half. T...

Aztec’s fighting for a playoff berth

By KYLE MCDANIEL   Pima has 3 games left in the season, two at home. The Aztecs will need to use this home field advantage to help secure a spot in the NJCAA Region I, Division I playoffs, because only the top six make it. Pima’s next game is away to the number 9 team in the country Phoenix College.   Oct. 13 vs. Mesa CC 0, PCC 1   The Aztecs won their second game in a row thanks to a second half goal from sophomore Tayler Rinehart, who was assisted by freshman Gabriela Molina. With this win over the Thunderbirds, Pima moved into 4th place in the ACCAC standings. Pima after this game now have 25 goals on the season, with sophomore Kylee Martin leading the way with 5. They’ve also had 11 different players score, which is good and bad.   Oct. 9 vs. South Mount...

Can you dig it?

By DANIEL VELASCO   Pima Community College’s archeology program is one that consists of the best aspects of science.   From working with peers to striving for greatness, Pima’s Archeology Club radiates the best things about the field. While the Archeology Club doesn’t have a specific goal, it does have separate values that the members hope to share with other Pima students.   “The club itself is a way to bring together people who have similar interests in both Archeology and Anthropology,” said Brittney Sandoval, treasurer of the Archeology Club and anthropology student at Pima.   Preservation is a common theme with the club. Because of the club’s preservation, many students make important connections and meet people who can help them find succ...

Board of Governors’ candidates face off

By JOE GIDDENS Maria Garcia and Sherryn “Vikki” Marshall are running on the midterm ballot to fill the seat of Sylvia Lee’s District 3 seat on the Pima Community College Board of Governors.  Lee served one term for six years after winning the seat from Marshall in 2012.  Maria Garcia Garcia’s connection to Pima Community College goes back to the early ’70s.  Then a new transplant to Tucson, she took up residence near St. Mary’s Road and Grande Avenue with her husband, Jorge Garcia, who relocated to Tucson because of the University of Arizona.  “I found Pima to be very enlightening,” she said. “I have used Pima … not only in my professional career but also in my personal life in learning how to raise my child by taking child development courses.”  Garcia started working at Raytheon...
