Pima cross country runs to Conference Championships

By JOSHUA SHAVER Pima Community College is running away from the competition. Last season, Pima went all the way to the NJCAA Nationals. Pima eventually ended up losing to Iowa Community College, but it is on a fast track for similar, if not more, success. Can Pima duplicate its success from last year, or can it at least improve from its 16th place showing? At the Dave Murphy Invitational, women and men competed against a number of schools. In the women’s 5K (3.1 miles), sophomore Iriana Sanchez finished in 28th place with a time of 23 minutes, 58 seconds. Her friend and teammate Rainbow Hoss placed behind her at 24 minutes, 4 seconds. The Aztecs lack dominance on the mound

By KYLE McDANIEL After 11 seasons at the helm, Armando Quiroz called it quits as Pima Community College’s Softball coach. Rebekah Quiroz, who had been an associate head coach since 2013, was promoted to head coach. Quiroz, a former player at Pima, knows what it’ll take to get the Aztecs back on top of junior college softball. What has helped ease the transition is the eight returning players, including sophomore pitcher Alese Casper, who will have to step up this year as she takes over for last season’s ace Paige Adair. Sophomore Mya Cabral was named Pre-season NJCAA All-American after making the All-American team at the end of last season, which could help boost the team morale. Aztec’s catching fire at the right time

By KYLE MCDANIEL The #4 Aztecs are on a seven game win streak heading into their clash with the #11 team in the country. During the win streak they have outscored opponents 27 to 4. If they win their final three games it might propel them to 3rd or higher in the nation. To this point in the season Pima have scored 62 goals while only allowing 11. They have had 15 different goal scorers, with four players having at least 5 goals, but the overall leader is sophomore Hugo Kametani with 19. Oct. 13 vs. Mesa CC 0, PCC 3 With this victory over the Thunderbirds, it gave the Aztecs the season sweep. This is the fourth year in a row that Pima has swept the season series against Mesa.
