Photo by Raymond Suarez By Nate Martinez The men and women’s golf team kicked their season off with the Mesa Invitational Tournament on February 15-16. Overall, the men’s team failed to place. However, freshman Connor Wierman from Ironwood Ridge High School finished in 16th place individually. He posted a score of 76 on the first day and 73 the next. Andrew Rivas, the freshman from Canyon Del Oro High School, finished 24th overall, shooting an impressive par 72 on his first day. He struggled on the second day, shooting an 81 for an overall of 153. Sophomore Jackson Williams, also from Ironwood Ridge, put up a score of 193. The women’s team had a lackluster day as well. Aztecs Start Season Hot, Take Three of Four From Ranked Opponent

They took on the number 20 ranked College of Southern Nevada Coyotes in back-to-back doubleheaders last Friday and Saturday. February 12 (Game 1): Aztecs 8, Coyotes 9 In a very rocky start for the Aztecs, Pima found themselves in the hole 9-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning in game one of their first double header. Freshman pitcher Wilson Bannister gave up four runs in the first inning of his first start of the season. He was taken out in the top of the 5th after allowing a home run and nine runs in 4.1 innings.. By Nate Martinez By now, one would have to be living under a rock to not know that COVID-19 really hindered college athletics. Many student athletes in the United States had their seasons cut drastically short thanks to the virus. For some, this is heartbreaking, but they can look forward to another chance to play next season. For others, this may have been the last year of eligibility to make one more run at a potential championship. Things seemed to have hit an all time low for student athletes across the United States until a recent decision by the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). Tucson to host ‘Sonoran Caribbean carnival’

By Nate Martinez The melting pot that is Tucson, Arizona gets a little bit more cultural with its first in person/virtual Caribbean Carnival. The event will be at the Dunbar Pavilion Center on November 14 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.. The carnival will feature a live DJ, Caribbean themed costumes and many South American food trucks. There will be a 40-person limit to the event. However, a Zoom broadcast will show all of the festivities. A link is on the event's website. Face masks and social distancing will be mandated. Pima women’s basketball team holds ring ceremony to celebrate championship

By Nate Martinez On October 4, the Pima Community College Women's Basketball team celebrated last season's Division II Region I championship with a ring ceremony. The team got together that Sunday afternoon via zoom call, organized by head coach Todd Holthaus, Athletic Director Jim Monaco and Vice Chancellor Bruce Moses, to reflect on the past season, as well as their accomplishments in their final game. Each player received a box with the ring, nicknamed the “Infinity Stone” by assistant coach Pete Fajardo, as well as a sweater and a team picture. They were instructed not to open until the zoom call. The Aztecs earned this accomplishment by defeating rival school, Mesa Community College by a convincing score of 76-59. By NATE MARTINEZ We’ve had to adapt to a lot in the six months since COVID hit the USA: wearing masks in public, going to school virtually, maintaining a six feet between ourselves and our friends and not being able to catch a quick ball game to ease the stress of our day to day lives.Yet, at what felt like the absolute perfect time, sports returned. There is still a lot of work to be done obviously, but the way that organizations like the UFC, NBA and NHL have utilized the bubble (an area like the NBA’s temporary home at Orlando Sports Complex where only players, coaches and staff can stay), it would seem as though we are headed in the right direction.
