The Word: How have rising gas prices affected you?

By Josh BaileyPima Post As prices continue to rise almost daily, Americans are pinning the blame on a plethora of figures and circumstances. Even while our representatives initiate discussions within the government about the crisis, such as the Biden administration seeking cooperation with the Federal Trade Commission to ensure gouging by fuel giants is not taking place, little action has been taken to effectively change the current trajectory of oil prices. Others argue it is simply the markets, and while the country remains divided on the topic practical plans have still yet to be put in place to prevent the average price per gallon from reaching five dollars in western states like California and Arizona. Alex Jimenez has more on rising gas prices. I asked people on West Campus...

Point Shaver: NFL’s Week 11

By JOSHUA SHAVERPima Post  If you are struggling with a gambling addiction, call 1-800-522-4700. Welcome back to Point Shaver. I had missed last week because of being sick, but we are back to helping you win money on football spreads. I predict a 60% win rate every week. GreenBay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings (Packers -2.5) Both teams are coming off a big win, but the Packers shut out the Seahawks who had Russell Wilson back. The Packers defense is becoming one of the best defenses in the league. In back-to-back games, the team held the Chiefs under 14 and held the Seahawks to a goose egg. Aaron Rodgers has had a quiet but really efficient year with 17 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions. Division games are always close, so I think the Packers win and cover in a close game, 2...

Top 9 Mexican food and drinks you must have this fall

Story and photos taken by CARLOS MIRANDAPima Post It's that time of the year again … the fall/winter season.  That means bring all the food, desserts and drinks our way. This season, these are the nine Mexican/Hispanic food, desserts and drinks you should try/enjoy at least one time. Posole Posole is a soup that has some type of shredded meat, pork or chicken. It also has lots of hominy, which are whole kernels of dried field corn. Sometimes people add pinto beans. Posole is best served with toasted buttered bread or tortilla. And you don't have to, but people like to garnish the soup with lime, cilantro, green onion or regular onion, cabbage, radishes and spicy chili flakes. This dish is best to eat on a nice cold day or even at family gatherings. Buñuelos B...

Point Shaver: NFL’s Week 9

By JOSHUA SHAVERPima Post If you are struggling with a gambling addiction, call 1-800-522-4700. Welcome back to Point Shaver. I had missed last week because of being sick, but we are back to helping you win money on football spreads. I predict a 60% win rate every week. Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints (Falcons +6) After Jameis Winston went down with an ACL tear, there are big questions at who will be the starting quarterback and both the Saints backups are below average. A division rival in the Falcons, who have a good offense, can make this a close game. I have the Saints winning, but the Falcons cover, 24-20. Buffalo Bills vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (Bills -14.5) Bills have a Top 5 offense and a Top 5 defense going against rookie quarterback Trevor Lawerence, who ha...

Young Thug’s ‘Punk’ shows he still has it

YSL Records BY NATE MARTINEZPima Post The month of October has been very kind to fans of hip hop across the United States. Recently, the highly touted singer/songwriter Young Thug dropped his second studio album “Punk” on Oct. 15.  The album opens up with a soft alternative rock kind of flow, something Young Thug fans have been used to for a while now.  Young Thug has been known to mix alternative genres with hip hop. In 2016, he dropped the mix tape, “JEFFREY,” which mixes influences of reggae and rock. Young Thug also gave his fans “Beautiful Thugger Girls,” which had heavy tones of country rock mixed in. Mixing punk and soft rock with hip hop may sound like an album that was destined for failure. Young Thug actually does an amazing job in blending the sounds to...

A whole new ‘Dune’

Courtesy of Warner Brothers Entertainment By JAVIER DOSAMONTES “Dune”Directed by: Denis VilleneuveRating: PG - 13Run time: 2 hours, 35 minutes In all honesty, I'm not a big fan of sci-fi movie franchises, but because of the people involved in this project, I was looking forward to the first installment of "Dune." Director Denis Villeneuve ("Sicario," "Arrival") is at the top of his game and his trajectory is beginning to feel a little Nolan-ish in the "Batman Begins"-slash-"The Prestige" era. Everything he has done in terms of style and vision starts to come together in this movie, making it the perfect set up before he drops down the hammer in the second installment of the series  à la "The Dark Knight." Nolan invented the blueprint on how to successfully attack th...

Point Shaver: Week 7

By JOSHUA SHAVERPima Post If you are struggling with a gambling addiction, call 1-800-522-4700. Welcome back to Point Shaver! As I promised, we went 60% and would have done even better if the Eagles didn’t get a 2-point conversion. I predict a 60% win rate with this week’s picks. Denver Broncos vs. Cleveland Browns (Broncos +3.5) The Browns can’t catch a break with injuries with Nick Chubb being ruled out, Kareem Hunt being carted off last week and Baker Mayfield being injured as well as their two starting offensive lineman. There are just so many injuries, and on top of that, it is a short week. The Broncos with a good defense are going to be able to keep this game low scoring and it will be a dog fight. I have Broncos with the upset, 19-17 Atlanta Falcons vs. Miami Dolph...

‘No time’ to be pretentious

By JAVIER DOSAMANTESPima Post “No Time to Die”Directed by: Cary Joji FukunagaRating: PG-13Run time: 2 hours, 43 minutes "No Time to Die '' is a great installment in the James Bond franchise and an awesome action movie — worth watching in theaters — but will make a great viewing when it hits a streaming service. It didn't redefine the franchise like "Casino Royale," and it's not as ambitious or stylish as "Skyfall." But it is wildly entertaining and is elevated to a more elegant popcorn movie because of the amazing directing, acting and score. Cary Joji Fukunaga, best known for directing the first season of "True Detective" — the dark HBO miniseries — gave this lighter screenplay a twist. His timing on when to inject comedic and cheesy moments gives the movie a blockbust...

Point Shaver: Week 6

By JOSHUA SHAVERPima Post If you are struggling with a gambling addiction, call 1-800-522-4700. Week 6 is upon us and I guarantee a 60% win rate this week.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Philadelphia Eagles (-6.5) Don’t think too deeply into the Eagles beating the Panthers last week without Christian Mccaffrey. Overall sloppy game by the Eagles while the Bucs scored a season high 45 points against a good defense in Miami. The Bucs have the better offensive weapons, have the better quarterback, have the better pass rush, etc. Bucs easily cover and win, 34-20. Los Angeles Chargers vs. Baltimore Ravens (Chargers +2.5) Both teams are coming off tremendous comebacks and great quarterback play. The only difference is the Chargers did it against a good Browns defense, and the Rav...

Pre-season NBA power rankings

By ALEX JIMENEZPima Post The NBA 2021-2022 season is set to start when the Nets and Lakers tip-off on Tuesday. Although these two teams would be considered favorites to most, the NBA is seeing much more parity across the league. For example, the Milwaukee Bucks are coming off an NBA championship -- having beat the Suns in the finals and the Nets, who didn’t have James Harden, in the Eastern Conference Finals.  The Phoenix Suns, who came short to the Bucks in the NBA Finals, have kept the core group of players who helped them reach high levels of success last season and have added a veteran in JaVale McGee. With the dynamic guard partnership of Chris Paul and Devin Booker, the Suns have one of the elite backcourts in the NBA. The Nets now have a unique situation to dea...
