Back-to-Back canceled games wake up bats

By Kyle McDaniel   The scheduled game at Paradise Valley Community College on Feb. 21 was cancelled and will be made up on Feb. 28 in Phoenix, the first pitch is 1 p.m.   The scheduled game vs GateWay CC on Feb. 23 was also cancelled and the date of the make up game will be announced later.   Feb. 26 (H): Game 1: PCC 14, Scottsdale CC 1 F/5   It looks like the back to back cancellations woke the Aztecs bats up, as they scored a combined 14 runs in the first three innings.   Multiple players played a key role in the demolition of the Artichokes, but the main architects were sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera and freshman Hope Adams. Caldera finished 2 for 4 with two RBI’s, while Adams went 1 for 3, but her one hit was massive, because it was a three run ho...

Out of the closet, not on TV

By ERIK MEDINA  I believe that representation allows us to move toward equality, and it is what I feel most minority groups desire.  The year 2018 was great for representation for many minority groups. “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Black Panther” broke boundaries. Both films have most, if not all, actors of minority descent.  “CRA” was the first major theatrical release to have an all-Asian cast since “The Joy Luck Club,” which was released in 1993. “Black Panther” also showed hiring minorities doesn’t jeopardize a film’s success. The film predominately was cast with black actors and had a variety of people of color working behind the scenes such as director Ryan Coogler.  Aside from ethnicity, we also saw more female-led films such as “Oceans Eight” and “A Simple Favor.” Both films portray...

Air Force to be reckoned with

Story by JOSH GRAY Photo by ERIK MEDINA In 2013, Pima Community College was given the opportunity to bid for a five-year contract titled Air Force Medical Operations Agency. Sharon Hollingsworth, program manager, was one of the first to try and get Pima’s first five-year contract. “Her leadership and experience and knowhow has been key to our success,” said Nate Gonzalez, academic director of Public Safety and Security. “One of the real innovative components to this contract is that it’s really built on partnerships,” said David Dore, Downtown Campus president. That contract between the United States Air Force and Pima College was to give initial paramedic training to Air Force personnel. The course averaged 60 students per year. Paramedic training takes, on average, between 6 to ...

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR- Once more

By JOE GIDDENS Welcome to a New Year and a new semester. The start of a New Year is often viewed as a blank slate of endless possibility, the chance for rebirth and self improvement with New Year’s resolutions.  Or you could decide to forego all of that and double down on your previous choices.   Prior to November’s midterms, Arizona Republicans occupied all statewide elected offices, held both chambers of the Legislature and a majority of the congressional seats. The blue wave hit, eroding away much of these holdings.  Republican Sen. Jeff Flake was replaced at the polls by a Democrat for the first time in 30 years. A similar trend occurred throughout the midterms in Arizona, a state that Trump won in 2016 by 4 points.  Faced with the trend of an increasingly purple state, two opti...

Turn life experiences into credits

By ALEXZANDRIA MARTINEZ Pima Community College has expanded its earned college credit through assessment into a program that can create more opportunities for students who want a college degree, but in less time based on previous employment.  The program is called Credit for Prior Learning, and Pima learned of this program from its national success.  “Fifty-six percent of students awarded prior learning credit earned a post-secondary degree within seven years, while only 21 percent non-prior credit learning students earned a degree,” said Amanda Abens, dean of workforce development and continuing education for Pima. “This is essentially the entryway for students to gain higher education.  “Prior learning is beneficial for Pima community economically,” she continued. “Our community is s...

Pima opens new front in cyber warfare

By DRAEDON LEDBETTER Pima Community College is the first college in the country to have a live-fire, hands-on cyber warfare range.  The Arizona Cyber Warfare Range at Pima Community College’s East Campus opened Jan. 25.  A live fire range addresses the threats to cyber security using the latest malware and other software in the world of cyberspace. Another way of explaining live fire is that the range is in a simulated environment and deals with the threats in cyberspace. The Arizona Cyber Warfare Range is a 501c3 non-profit organization, and its parent company is the Washington, D.C.-based National Cyber Warfare Foundation.  The three missions of AZCWR are education, cyber intel and advocating for the cyber security community.  The co-founders for AZCWR are Phoenix residents Brett S...
