‘The Misadventures of Larry and Lucy Luckless’ – Episode two

by Arthor Bookes, Editor-in-Chief of the PCC Creative Writing Club Previously, our intrepid heroes, twins Larry and Lucy Luckless, have resolved to search the mine owned by their late pa to find clues to his mysterious death. Once inside, calamity strikes! Larry falls through a sinkhole beneath his pa’s office, and Lucy’s confronted by pa’s former employee, Billy Rascal. Lucy stood stock-still, eyes locked on the barrel of Billy’s gun. His eyes darted between her and the sinkhole. He motioned with the gun. “Time t’git on outta here, girl.” Lucy cast a silent glance back at the sinkhole. She heard Larry groaning below. I can’t leave him, she thought. Fifty years expose need for campus facelift

Walls in need of paint, carpets needing replacement, bathrooms needing repairs, and outdated elevators demand attention. Revitalization of student and faculty enthusiasm compensates for the remodel. If you want to celebrate PCC’s 50 years, maybe start by giving the West Campus buildings a fresh look. PCC is doing a great job enriching its academic infrastructure. Hop into east side’s Hop Street Lounge

By JOSHUA SHAVER From the outside, Hop Street Lounge looks like a smaller bar. But once I walked in, I saw a really big, clean bar. Impressive. There’s a lot of room for people to lounge around, socialize and feel comfortable while drinking a variety of alcoholic beverages. Hop Street opened about six months ago. It has seen an influx of people that are there to play various games and drink craft beers. The very clean bar and new equipment give off a comfortable vibe. I loved the setting and the lighting of the bar, which gives off a smooth and chill environment. The eight TVs that Hop Street features is a bonus for people who want to drink and watch sports. PCC holds Respiratory Care Conference at Downtown Campus

By DRAEDON LEDBETTER The Arizona State Society for Respiratory Care held a conference April 3 in the Amethyst Room on Pima Community College’s Downtown Campus. The event ran from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. “This is one of my proudest moments in my 14 years of affiliation with the respiratory therapy program at Pima Community College,” said Pima Respiratory Care Program Director Jeffrey Miller. Miller has left Pima as of April 5 to be the respiratory therapy manager at Tucson Medical Center. Russell Schmidt is taking over Pima’s respiratory care program. PCC holds space for Team 18029’s weed-killing device

By DRAEDON LEDBETTER Pima Community College has started a partnership with the University of Arizona’s ENGR 498 class. UA Engineering needed more space to work, which meant moving the initiative moved its operation to the Mechatronics lab at the Downtown campus. The capstone project that Team 18029 has been working on is a weed-killing device. The weed-killing device uses a pneumatic punch which pinches and can drill holes to kill to weeds and increase crop production. The device identifies weeds through its manual operation as well as a camera positioned on its surface as of right now the machine is operational. The pneumatic punch will position itself over the weed and stomp it. Its overall purpose is to work in shaping the new frontier of agricultural technology. The Cap...

Aztecs striving to find victory on the field

By Kyle McDaniel March 30th (A) Game 1: PCC 13, Chandler-Gilbert CC 4 The Aztecs earned their first ACCAC season sweep, after they swept the Coyotes from Chandler-Gilbert. Heading into the seventh inning Pima was winning 8-4, when they tacked on five more runs to put the game out of reach. A bulk of the offense came from the 1-4 hitters as they scored 10 of the runs on 11 for 18 hitting. Sophomore Devynn Marshall went 5 for 5 at the plate with three RBI singles. Freshman Bianca Castillo got the win after throwing a complete game. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five. Winning streak snapped in Phoenix

March 9th (A) Game 1: PCC 0, Phoenix College 7 On a four game winning streak the Aztecs headed out on the road to take on the number three team in the nation. However Phoenix College proved why they’re ranked as high as they are, after the Aztecs had only two hits in the first game. By KYLE McDANIEL The world of sports card collecting is an ever-shrinking market, as more and more children have less interest in them. Matt Mortenson from Mountain View Sports, a sports collectible shop at Speedway Boulevard and Wilmot Road spoke about his thoughts on card collecting today. “The biggest factor I think is kids have phones, iPads and so many other avenues besides cards, so it’s not as cool as it was when I was a kid,” he said. With the increased awareness about how some sports will leave you with health issues later on in life, parents are enrolling their children in other activities. The Aztecs lack dominance on the mound

By KYLE McDANIEL After 11 seasons at the helm, Armando Quiroz called it quits as Pima Community College’s Softball coach. Rebekah Quiroz, who had been an associate head coach since 2013, was promoted to head coach. Quiroz, a former player at Pima, knows what it’ll take to get the Aztecs back on top of junior college softball. What has helped ease the transition is the eight returning players, including sophomore pitcher Alese Casper, who will have to step up this year as she takes over for last season’s ace Paige Adair. Sophomore Mya Cabral was named Pre-season NJCAA All-American after making the All-American team at the end of last season, which could help boost the team morale.
