Men’s Golfers shine at Pima Invitational

BY: ALEXANDER LOPEZ Title: Men’s Golfers shine at Pima Invitational   The Aztec Men’s golf Team closed out their home invitational Feb.19, at Omni National Golf Course, 6 strokes behind the top spot. The teams two-day total of 597 (299-298) was enough to secure second place but wasn’t enough to hold off South Mountain Community College who’s two-day total was 591 (303-288). The Aztecs didn’t go down without a fight. Leading after day one, by a slim margin of 4 shots, Pima fell to South Mountain, in the team competitions, who turned up the heat and put it away in day two. Freshman Matthew Fimbres (Cienega High School) placed second with a two-day total of 143 (71-72), missing first place in the individuals competition, by one shot to South Mountain’s Brandon Meyer. The Designated Hitter is dumb and stupid and I hate it

By KYLE KERSEY For the uninitiated, here’s scripture: “The designated hitter rule allows teams to use another player to bat in place of the pitcher. Because the pitcher is still part of the team’s nine defensive players, the designated hitter -- or “DH” -- does not take the field on defense.” This is the official MLB glossary definition. The DH is a rule exclusive to the American League, adopted in 1973, a time of national confusion due to the unpopularity of the Vietnam War and a burgeoning oil crisis. Baseball is a fundamentally ridiculous game, a game filled with unbalanced rules - sometimes unwritten rules - that are treated as the word of god by fundamentalists. Like many religions, it’s the fundamentalists who care the most, those who scoff at the idea of pitch clocks and mound v...

The lost art of sports card collecting

By KYLE McDANIEL   The world of sports card collecting is an ever-shrinking market, as more and more children have less interest in them.   Matt Mortenson from Mountain View Sports, a sports collectible shop at Speedway Boulevard and Wilmot Road spoke about his thoughts on card collecting today.   “The biggest factor I think is kids have phones, iPads and so many other avenues besides cards, so it’s not as cool as it was when I was a kid,” he said.   With the increased awareness about how some sports will leave you with health issues later on in life, parents are enrolling their children in other activities.   Over the last seven years, children ages 6 to 12 that participated in team sports was about 56 percent, according to the Aspen Institute, an edu...

The Aztecs lack dominance on the mound

By KYLE McDANIEL   After 11 seasons at the helm, Armando Quiroz called it quits as Pima Community College’s Softball coach.   Rebekah Quiroz, who had been an associate head coach since 2013, was promoted to head coach. Quiroz, a former player at Pima, knows what it’ll take to get the Aztecs back on top of junior college softball.   What has helped ease the transition is the eight returning players, including sophomore pitcher Alese Casper, who will have to step up this year as she takes over for last season’s ace Paige Adair. Sophomore Mya Cabral was named Pre-season NJCAA All-American after making the All-American team at the end of last season, which could help boost the team morale.   The Aztecs kicked off the season at the College of Southern Nevada Kickoff...
