News Brief: Future of Community Campus

By NORA THOMPSON At Pima Community College’s Governing Board meeting Nov. 14, the sale of Community Campus, along with the purchase of hotels across the street from the Downtown Campus, will be approved or denied. The Community Campus is located at 401 N. Bonita Ave. In a recent email, Pima officials say it has not sold the campus yet. The Tucson City Council must approve it, because the building is on land that it owns. If Community Campus gets sold, then Pima will be able to occupy the space until July 2019, when Community Campus programs and services will be moved to other campuses. All will be determined at the Nov. 14 governing board meeting.

Pima gives thanks to veterans

Story by JOSHUA GRAY Photos by JOE GIDDENS Veterans Day was Nov. 11. Pima Community College celebrated a little bit earlier this year on Nov. 8 at the Downtown Campus. This Veterans’ Day celebration was coordinated by Pima’s Veteran Group, who has planned this event for the past seven years. “The celebration is to honor Pima Community College student veterans,” said Jorge Camarillo, student services coordinator for Pima’s Department of Military and Veteran Services. Camarillo is one of the many people who helped make this event happen. The Veterans Day celebration was a free event that was open to all. It invited different kinds of vendors to come out and support their local veterans while also getting a chance to promote. This year, each business was offered a chance to speak about...

New terms for Meet and Confer

By AMARIS ENCINAS Changes have come to Meet and Confer. Normally, when changing employee policy, Pima Community College Education Association can present its side to the Governing Board of Pima, while the administration presents its side. From there, the board reaches a decision. Now, PCCEA does not have the opportunity to present its side. Instead, it goes directly to the administration to decide whether to agree or disagree. Pima Faculty Senate disseminated

By AMARIS ENCINAS Before the Faculty Senate was the “Faculty Senate,” it was also known as “The Faculty Council” or “The Council” for short. The Senate has been around for a little more than 41 years and continues to be an important aspect of the college process. The Faculty Senate meets from 1 to 3 p.m. the first Friday of every month during the academic school year at the Downtown Campus in the Amethyst Room. All of the Faculty Senate meetings are divided into three parts: the Report Session, Business Session and the Open Forum. Participation is limiting in the Reporting Session and the Business Sessions to elected members and invited guests. Pima welcomes robotics with open ARMs

By ANGEL CANEZ Pima intends to take some big steps into the future by working on the first Center of Excellence at the Downtown Campus. Earlier this month, Pima was awarded the (Pathways for Success) Title III Grant l from the Department of Education. There are plans to open centers, centered on IT, health care, art, culinary and hospitality, and public safety and security according to Ana Grief but she did not give a specific timeline as to when. PCC recently bought and cleared what used to be part of the Fortuna Inn for 1.35 million dollars adjacent to the Downtown Campus. By PARKER BROCK The propositions that will be on the ballot will be proposing new laws, and amendments to the state constitution will have lasting effects on the state’s economy and revenue generation. The general election, which will take place Nov. 6, will have five propositions. Here’s a guide most of the propositions to make an informed decision on which proposition to vote for. Proposition 305 This would initiate state Senate Bill 1431, which passed in 2017 and would increase the amount of recipients eligible to receive an empowerment scholarship account. Kudos to Pima cops

By CHRISTOPHER ALBERS The Pima Community College Police Department was honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving for being the top fundraising law enforcement agency for the 5K run/walk event on Sept. 22. This is PCCPD’s first year participating. A big shout out goes to Officer Eugene Edgerson who organized this event and also was honored by MADD as the top fundraising individual. I am hopeful that next year we can raise even more money and bring more personnel to the event. Pima Briefs: Monaco named the acting athletic director

Photos and story By JOE GIDDENS Pima Football Head Coach Jim Monaco was named the acting athletic director of Pima Community College on Oct. 29. Edgar Soto, who held the athletic director position for 11 years, is moving on to become president of the Desert Vista Campus. Monaco started at Pima in 2011, and will be the school's final football coach as the program ends this season. After Pima Community College Chancellor Lee Lambert announced the appointment during a press conference, he said that more sports programs probably are going to be terminated at Pima. No specific sports programs were named, however, and a timeline was not given by the college’s administration.

By JOE GIDDENS Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients are a diverse group of young people. “People think that DACA recipients ares solely Mexican or Latinx identity are from Hispanic back grounds, which is mostly true here in Arizona, but actually nationwide that’s far from true,” said Mira Patel of ScholarshipsA-Z. Patel herself is an embodiment of that. She was born and raised in London by her Indian parents and moved to Northern Arizona at a young age. DACA recipients come from all different backgrounds, nations and languages.
