What’s growing in your backyard?

By: DANIEL VELASCO Rain brings the best things to Tucson on the rare occasion we receive it. Rain brings cool weather, earthy scents and vibrant colors. The rain also creates the exact conditions perfect for growing fungus. From yeast to athlete’s foot, fungus is everywhere and will inevitably in one way or another, eat us. With this threat heavily upon us, and finishing up monsoon season -- albeit a fairly dry one -- here’s a guide to some common fungi you might find at whatever cold, dark and damp place you hang out at in Arizona. While mushrooms usually grow in forested areas that receive plenty of rain, Arizona still is home to an array of mushrooms. From Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) to Valley Fever (Coccidioides), Arizona is home to multiple different mushrooms that yield a wide...

A man without borders: David Andres

David Andres in the Bernal Art Gallery. (Photo Courtesy the Bernal Gallery) AMARIS ENCINASPima Post David Andres paints his own vision for what the art world would be like if the sky was as wide as it was high. The painter has been the curator of the Bernal Gallery for the last 11 years and the instructor of the Gallery Museum Studies class at Pima Community College. Over the course of 27 years, Andres has traveled throughout Mexico, and his love for the country inspires a lot of themes that arise in his exhibitions. “We might be separated by borders, but it doesn’t make any difference,” said Andres when discussing the concept of “Separated by Borders.” “These are incredible artists that are living just south of us and haven’t had the opportunity to show here in Tucson.” ...

Standing in the Hall of Fame

By RENE ESCOBAR The Hall of Fame, the pinnacle of the sports world is a testament to the legacies of athletes. Displayed in museums around the country, the stars of the past are immortalized and viewed by fans. None are bigger than the National Football League Hall of Fame. Every summer, the Hall of Fame induction ceremony draws a national audience with its annual game to kick off the preseason. It generates millions of dollars in revenue for the museum and more for the NFL. Lately some hall of famers have requested that some of that revenue be put into a hall of fame salary and an insurance for life fund. Although the members of the hall of fame are in the right for requesting something such as insurance for life, should be considered by the multi-billion-dollar company of the NFL. ...

Bruno repeats as ACCAC champion

BY ANGEL CANEZ The Pima Community College Men’s and Women's track teams competed in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference, Cross Country Championships on Sept. 26 at the Glen Lake golf course in Glendale Arizona. Katherine Bruno led the way once again coming in first place in the 5K race, for the second year in a row at the ACCAC championship.   “Katie's back to back conference championship titles are impressive. She shared the lead with the runner up until the 2 mile mark and then pulled away.” Cross country coach Greg Wenneborg, said.   Bruno also set the course record along with a personal best time of 18 minutes and 12 seconds. This makes Bruno 3rd top ten finish in as many races. Freshman Mary Siml came in seventh place with a time just two seconds over 2...

Et tu Pima: Student-senate connection

By ANGEL CANEZ   When you hear the word “senate,” you probably think of the approaching midterm elections or Washington, D.C.   However, there’s another senate that exists under your nose: the Pima Community College Student Senate.   The Senate consists of 14 elected Pima students. Their goal is to act as a voice for the people and to maximize Pima students’ learning experiences. They act as a bridge from the student body to the school administration to help keep tabs on campus problems.   “We represent the student population, and we always have to keep that in mind when making choices with the board,” said Pima East Student Senator Caitlin Encinas by email.   However, not everybody can run for the Senate. Requirements include attending at least 85 pe...

Latinx: a cultural exchange

By Joe Giddens   Languages change. This was reflected in an evolution of Pima Community College’s annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s event, “A Celebration of Latinx History,” was held at the Downtown Campus on Sept. 26. The event boasted two firsts: It was the first time Pima has used the term “Latinx” for the month and for the first time, the Writing Department was involved in the proceedings, according to Mike Lopez of the Downtown Campus Student Life Office. “Because we're a Hispanic-serving institution, it seems like a particularly important month to highlight at the college,” said Brooke Anderson, organizer and writing faculty member.“(The term ‘Latinx’) is the most inclusive way to represent people from a Latin descent. And so not only does it rep...

Aztecs ousted in first round of playoffs

By KYLE MCDANIEL   Pima’s season ended not in a fashion that they had hoped, losing in their first playoff match. This was the second consecutive year they lost in the first match.   The Aztecs have some key players they will be losing due to the NJCAA rule, allowing for only two years of competition. Keeper Mackenzie Bernal and other sophomores that were key contributors were Kylee Martin, Paola Ruedaflores, Tayler Rinehart, Perla Blanco, Annalisa Verdugo and Mykayla Toth.   Kylee Martin who played midfield was named first team all ACCAC/Region I after she started all 21 games. She also had five goals and one assist.   Oct. 22 at Scottsdale CC 1, PCC 0   The Aztecs season came to a screeching halt on Monday when they lost to the Artichokes in the NJ...

Aztec’s fall out of the top five

By KYLE McDANIEL   So far this season, Pima Community College has won 85 percent of its games for a record of 11-2, which currently has the team ranked No. 6 in the nation.   When you average 3 goals a game and you concede under 1 goal a game, that’s a recipe for success.   Oct. 2 vs. Glendale CC “Canceled”   Sept. 29 at Paradise Valley CC 3, PCC 5   It took the Paradise Valley Pumas a mere 7 minutes to score on the Aztecs, but Pima wasn’t going to roll over that easy. The team put three goals past Paradise before the half.   Then the Pumas made it interesting in the 68th minute by netting a second goal, but the Aztecs scored two more times in the 70th minute to put the game out of reach.   Pima had four different scorers on the day, whic...
